Journey Of An Apprentice

A typical 4-year Gas Engineering Apprenticeship at our provider, Blackpool and The Fylde College, combines one day a week at college with practical, on the job experience alongside qualified engineers.

Apprentices gradually develop from learning the fundamentals to working independently and achieving industry recognised qualifications.

Year One

Foundations

  • Health & safety, tools and materials.
  • Basic plumbing and heating principles.
  • Shadow experienced engineers on domestic jobs.
  • Learn customer service and safe working practices.

Year Two

Building Skills

  • Install and maintain heating systems.
  • Develop fault finding and repair techniques.
  • Carry out more practical work under supervision.
  • Build evidence towards apprenticeship qualifications.

Year Three

Taking Responsibility

  • Diagnose and repair boilers and heating systems.
  • Complete more work independently while being mentored.
  • Gain confidence in servicing and installations.
  • Prepare for industry assessments.

Year Four

Becoming A Qualified Engineer

  • Refine advanced diagnostic and technical skills.
  • Complete End Point Assessment and final qualifications.
  • Achieve Gas Safe competency (subject to meeting all industry requirements).
  • Progress into a fully qualified Domestic Gas Engineer role, ready to work independently.
